Pontefract Castle

Getting Here

Pontefract Castle is located just a few minutes walk from the town centre. The grounds are free to the public all year round.

By Car and Coach
Accessible from the A1 or Junction 32 of the M62. There is a small free car park behind the castle, opposite All Saints Church. Follow the brown tourism parking signs for the castle or use WF8 2JF in your sat nav.

Public Transport
The castle is just down the road from Pontefract Bus Station, and around 0.5 miles from Baghill Railway Station and Monkhill Railway Station. Tanshelf Railway Station is approx. one mile away.
There are disabled parking and drop off points in front of the castle on Castle Chain, but these are limited and can usually only be used by 2 or 3 cars.

Opening hours

The castle site is open: Monday to Friday: 8:30am to 4:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday: 9:30am to 4:30pm.

The visitor centre and gift shop are open from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday).
