This Day in History: 1645-12-28
On 28th December 1645, the Parliamentarians stormed and took the nearby Church of All Saints, which had been incorporated into Pontefract Castle’s defences. Eleven men and boys from the garrison were inside and escaped into the bell tower but were trapped for five days. Eventually, they cut the bell ropes, crept along the church roof at night, scrambled down the wall and escaped back to the castle, but the Parliamentarians spotted them, shooting one Royalist dead and wounding another.
