This Day in History: 1645-06-16
On 16th June 1645, there was great rejoicing among the besiegers on hearing the news of the Parliamentary victory at the Battle of Naseby. A letter was sent from Parliament’s Colonel General Poyntz to Governor Lowther at the garrisonĀ to inform him of this event and to summon him to surrender the castle, whilst there was yet time for mercy. The governor of the castle replied that he neither feared Colonel General Poyntz’s forces nor valued his mercy.
