This Day in History: 1649-01-06

On 6th January 1649, Thomas Margetts wrote to Parliamentarian Captain Adam Baynes in London from Pontefract using the once-a-week post: ‘…..We have lately had several Councils of war here for the trial of offenders, wherein we have proceeded to the execution of exemplary Justice upon some, to the great satisfaction of the country and reformation of the army here……The well-affected in these parts do greatly rejoice (the malignants are as much troubled) a. t your gallant proceedings against Charles Stuart……….We would fain be doing something in these parts while we are together; when we are gone into larger quarters (as when this Castle is taken)….The poor people in these parts are afraid of Jocky (Scots) again, hearing rumour as if they were preparing for a second Invasion; And I perceive that is the great hope of this besieged enemy….’
